Wallingford is a market town on the western side of the River Thames in the south of Oxfordshire. The river is spanned by Wallingford Bridge, a 900ft medieval stone bridge. The earliest reference to a bridge across the River Thames in Wallingford is in 1141. Wallingford Castle was built by the Normans, but only ruins remain today – much of the stone was used in other local buildings, and also to repair Windsor Castle.
